Big Mama is watching you

분류없음 | 2008/03/08 18:46

China has the perfect ingredients ready for a digital Panopticon. There is a decentralised structure of self-censorship. There is little public awareness or legal protection of privacy. There is only one gateway that needs to be monitored. The market is producing code that is the digital equivalent of the Panopticon; code that makes it possible to turn what is private into public and that enables complete monitoring of each individual user. China can readily purchase this code. Big Mama will be watching you.

- Tsui, Lokman. 2001. "Big Mama is Watching You: Internet Control and the Chinese Government." M.A. Thesis. Leiden: University of Leiden.

What applies to mainland China may also fit the Republic of Korea. A "decentralized structure of self-censorship" (which the government has imposed upon the largest internet service operators nationwide) and "little public awareness... [of] privacy" come to mind. There is very little "legal protection of privacy" as well! (What did the big institutions do to protect the interests of people when big corporations such as SK Telecom, NCSoft and Auction either deliberately leaked or has been hacked to spill personal information of their customers?)
